LOS ANGELES - LA Civil Rights joined community leaders in Leimert Park today to celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the day when enslaved Black Americans of Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom on June 19th, 1865 - 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Executive Director Capri Maddox joined the Juneteenth Classical Music and Dance Festival hosted by Community Build, where she presented the official City of Los Angeles Juneteenth Proclamation. Talent included jazz musician Dwight Trible, the Fernando Pullum Youth Jazz Orchestra and food by Chef Marilyn.
At the same time, the LA Civil Rights Director of Racial Equity David Price joined our Reparations Advisory Commission for a Juneteenth Community Listening Session on Reparations hosted by the National Assembly of American Slavery Descendants and Coalition for a Just & Equitable California, where we shared updates from the California Reparations Task Force and LA City Reparations Advisory Commission.
