The Los Angeles City Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), in partnership with the Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department (LACR), recently presented its landmark Menopause Workplace Experience Report to the City Council’s Civil Rights, Immigration, Social Services, and Neighborhoods Committee. The report is a response to Councilmember Katy Yaraslavsky’s CF 25-1220 “Menopause Motion,” sponsored by CSW, and the first initiative related to menopause ever brought to the City Council.
The presentation highlighted findings from a comprehensive citywide survey of nearly 1,100 municipal employees. The report detailed the significant impact that unmanaged menopause symptoms have on career advancement, workplace satisfaction, and overall employee well-being, while emphasizing the pervasive stigma surrounding these experiences in the professional environment.
To address these challenges, the CSW proposed actionable recommendations to foster an inclusive workplace, including:
- manager and employee training
- flexible scheduling
- physical accommodations
- enhanced healthcare coverage.
Members of the City Council committee expressed strong support for the initiative, which marks a pivotal step forward in advancing workplace equity for City of Los Angeles employees.
