LA Civil Rights Reaches Out to Armenian Community for Information and Claims Regarding Potential Discriminatory Bank Account Closures Based on Armenian Heritage

Los Angeles, CA – March 5, 2025 –  The Los Angeles Civil Right Department (LA Civil Rights), in cooperation with a private law firm and the Armenian Bar Association, is actively reaching out to the Los Angeles Armenian community for assistance with its ongoing investigation into allegations of discriminatory bank account closures.  LA Civil Rights is encouraging individuals to file claims if their bank accounts may have been closed or restricted based on their perceived Armenian heritage, particularly those with last names ending in "-yan" or "-ian."

LA Civil Rights have received reports suggesting that banks may have engaged in discriminatory practices, closing or restricting accounts without legitimate explanation, often targeting individuals of Armenian heritage If proven, these actions may violate local civil rights laws against national origin discrimination.

"We need the community's help to fully understand the scope of this potential discrimination against the Armenian community in Los Angeles," said Capri Maddox, Executive Director of LA Civil Rights. "If you, or someone you know, has had a bank account closed or restricted without a clear and legitimate explanation, and your last name ends in 'yan' or 'ian,' or you believe you were targeted due to your Armenian heritage, please contact us to file a Civil Rights claim with our department. Your experience can help us ensure equal access to financial services in Los Angeles."

LA Civil Rights encourages anyone in Los Angeles who believes they have experienced discriminatory account closures or restrictions within the past three years due to their Armenian heritage to come forward and file a claim. Even if you're unsure whether discrimination was a factor, contact our investigators. Filing a claim is free and doesn't preclude you from any other lawsuits you may be involved in on the same matter. It is an important step in holding institutions accountable and seeking justice.

LA Civil Rights stresses that all information shared will be treated confidentially to the extent permitted by law. The department is committed to ensuring equal financial access for all Angelenos and will pursue all legal avenues to address discrimination.
