EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CAPRI MADDOX ON THE HATE-MOTIVATED ATTACK IN DTLA
LOS ANGELES - A mob outside Los Angeles City Hall assaulted Berlinda Nibo this past Wednesday in what appears to be a hate-motivated attack. Capri Maddox, Executive Director of the Los Angeles Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department, released the following statement:
“An Angeleno was attacked in the heart of LA’s Civic Center this week simply because of the color of her skin. This is unacceptable, and it cannot be ignored.
We are heartened to see a hate crime investigation has been launched into what happened to Berlinda Nibo. But this is not an isolated incident. Hate crimes in Los Angeles are at their highest point in 30 years. Violent hate crimes have jumped to their highest level since 2008. In 2019 alone, hate crimes involving white supremacy jumped 38%.
Last year, three trans women were assaulted and robbed in Hollywood. A synagogue in Beverly Hills was ransacked in 2019. Hate-motivated attacks are rising against Asian, Black and Jewish Angelenos.
LA Civil Rights was established in December 2020 to enforce LA’s anti-discrimination law, provide an equity lens to policies, reduce barriers for marginalized communities, and seek hate crime prevention. The importance of this work is made clearer every day. As long as hate persists, we will be here to seek justice.”
- Capri Maddox, Executive Director of the Los Angeles Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department.
