LOS ANGELES - City and community leaders gathered in El Pueblo, the historic birthplace of the City of Los Angeles, on Sunday, May 2nd for a community day of service & clean up. The event, co-hosted by the city's Department of Public Works and Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department (LA Civil Rights), was crafted to kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), and supported by 14 co-sponsors and over 70 volunteers from all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities.
After welcoming all participants in El Pueblo for refreshments and opening remarks, volunteers divided into five groups and removed trash and debris from Civic Center to Chinatown. The community day of service not only beautified a Los Angeles neighborhood, but was a display of solidarity against hate, violence and division facing the AAPI community in particular. The event was emceed by Public Works Commissioner Jessica Caloza, who is the chair of the city's Asian Pacific American Heritage Month planning committee.
