
Erma J. Bernard Gibson was appointed by Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve as a Commissioner on the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women, where she is dedicated to promoting the welfare of women in the Los Angeles community and ensuring their full and equal participation in city government. In this role, she advises the Mayor and City Council on the needs and challenges facing women, leading efforts to investigate and address issues that adversely impact them. Alongside fellow commissioners, she recommends programs that create greater opportunities for women across the city.
Committed to gender equity, Erma actively liaises with community groups to identify and remove barriers that hinder women’s full potential.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Leadership
Erma began her career in grassroots advocacy, witnessing firsthand the struggles of communities affected by discrimination. This passion for justice led her to serve on various boards and initiatives focused on civil rights and gender equity, ultimately culminating in her appointment as Commissioner for the Status of Women.
The Los Angeles Commission on Women
As a key advisory body, the LA Commission on Women plays a critical role in shaping policies that impact women’s rights, covering issues such as workplace equity, reproductive health, education, and safety. The Commission:
• Advises local government on policies affecting women’s rights.
• Collaborates with community organizations and gathers data to identify best practices and gaps in gender equity.
• Serves as a hub for innovative ideas that improve the lives of women and girls across Los Angeles.
Erma remains steadfast in her commitment to advocating for the rights and advancement of women throughout the city.
Philanthropy & Community Involvement
A devoted community leader, Erma has been a member of The Los Angeles Drifters since 1999, serving as President for four years. This philanthropic women’s organization awards scholarships to deserving students.
She holds a B.A. in Business Administration and Marketing and retired from Shell Oil Company after 25 years as a Distribution Coordinator. Following retirement, she worked for United Methodist Ministries as an Administrative Analyst, managing real estate.
Her dedication to service extends across various organizations:
• Vice President of her AARP Chapter
• Member of First African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Political Action Committee
• Volunteer at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for 23 years
• Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused children
Above all, Erma is a proud mother of two and grandmother of five, all of whom have either graduated from or are currently attending college. She remains actively involved in their lives, continuing her lifelong mission of empowerment, advocacy and service.
