LA Civil Rights Department Celebrates 5th Anniversary of Award-Winning "LA For All" Hate Crime Prevention Campaign
LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, the Los Angeles City Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department (“LA Civil Rights”) joined city leaders and community partners at City Hall to commemorate the 5th anniversary of "LA For All" weekend, highlighting the award-winning, grant-funded hate crime prevention “LA IS FOR EVERYONE” campaign dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion, and belonging across Los Angeles.
Hosted by Los Angeles City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez (District 13) and supported by Mayor Karen Bass, today's press conference brought together City leaders to reflect on five years of impact and reaffirm a shared message of unity: Los Angeles is strongest when Angelenos show up for one another.
"Today’s gathering is a powerful reminder that every Angeleno—regardless of background—deserves to feel supported, celebrated, and seen in our city," said Capri Maddox, Executive Director of the LA Civil Rights Department. "We extend our deepest gratitude to Councilmember Soto-Martínez for hosting today's event, and to Mayor Bass for her steadfast support of our mission to build an ‘LA For All'."
The anniversary press conference officially launches a weekend of citywide activations to mark the campaign's milestone.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
First launched in 2020 in response to rising hate incidents across the region, the "LA For All" campaign has grown into a model for municipal hate prevention. Today, its message spans 21 languages across more than 20,000 locations—including public transit, parks, libraries, LAX kiosks, and local business storefronts. In 2022, "LA For All" earned a Bronze Award from the American Advertising Federation's Los Angeles Competition, making it the only recognized campaign created without an outside advertising agency.
LA Civil Rights encourages all residents to participate by snapping photos of the illuminated landmarks on Friday evening, sharing them on social media with the hashtag #LAForAllChallenge, and tagging @LACivilRights to amplify the message that hate has no place in Los Angeles.
ShineLA & Tom LaBonge Day of Service (Saturday, September 26, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Community organizations join Mayor Karen Bass’s ShineLA initiative and Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson for a volunteer day along the Vermont Corridor (Florence to Manchester). Meeting at Crenshaw Christian Center, volunteers and speakers—including Mayor Bass, Council President Harris-Dawson, and the Tom LaBonge family—will honor the late Councilmember’s legacy through community service. Link to the flyer here.
Councilmember Tom LaBonge, affectionately known as "Mr. Los Angeles," took immense pride in public service. He exemplified what it means to lead through action, showing up not just for his own district, but for our entire city. Tom believed deeply in civic pride and embodied the spirit of an "LA for Everyone," which is why his Day of Service is a core part of "LA for All" Week.
